A Pediatrician just told me about one creative Mom who found out that her fussy baby could only be soothed by the loud sounds of a vacuum cleaner! Unfortunately for this sleep deprived Mom her apartment complex neighbors did not appreciate hearing the vacuum cleaner at all hours of the night. To appease her neighbors and her fussy baby she decided to record the rumbling sound of the vacuum cleaner. This smart Mom was then able to soothe her baby by playing the recording at a reasonable volume. She was able to calm her crying baby and no longer disturb the neighbors!!
Great site! I’ve found some good/ funny videos on Youtube that have helped me with my colicky baby. Check out this awesome video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANgLcpO6tiI
If I twirl in circles with a huge smile on my face, while he is in on the floor, he calms down. This doesn’t work everyday, but when it does I am left dizzy, but I can hold him in my arms while I lay on the floor and recover from the spinning and his crying.
We are musicians and it seems our son may be too. He always stops crying when we play techno music. The trouble is, we both hate it. So now what we do is play club music at a low-ish volume from the room speakers while listening to our MP3 players on headphones. To each his/her own!!
Keep a fan running, it works like a charm.
We swear by the white noise machine by homedics (the basic one) in the waterfall setting. Uses less energy and water than a faucet or vacuum.
If you own and iPhone, there are free apps for available from the iTunes store that will generate white noise. Free is always worth a try
How about this one? Running a faucet!:

We have 10 month old girl twins. One of them can be calmed when she’s crying by burping and other noises that replicate gross body functions. These sounds immediately calm her and crack her up. Unfortunately the other doesn’t think they are funny and immediately starts sobbing.
It’s all about FANS! My nephew was a fussy baby. One night my sister and her husband left me alone with my nephew and needless to say I was a bit panicked when they left and he began to cry. I went into the kitchen and bounced him as we listened to the fan above the stove. It worked immediately. The pouting ceased and he soon fell asleep. Now that he is almost two, he does not fall for that anymore but it did the trick when he was 3-8 months old.
I can vouch for Lydia’s story – thats my baby! So if this makes anyone with a fussy baby feel better I had actually forgotten about the fan technique! So you will survive and forget – I guess thats how you end up with another baby! But my fussy baby trick is the magic three steps Swaddle, then while still holding them turn them on their side, and then if that doesn’t do the trick while still holding them on their side go shhhhh in the babies ear
No for my story my fussy little boy was so fussy that he wouldn’t take his bottle even when he was clearly hungry so we had to give him a washcloth to suck on and then trick him by switching out the bottle for the cloth! He is now 17 months and love his washcloths he carries them around the house and takes them to sleep!
Crying babies huh? That’s funny because I can hear one crying right now. Luckily it is not mine. My girls are “big” now but I will never forget my Dad doing jumping-jacks to get one of my daughters to stop crying!
Fantastic post!
“Babies can be fussy. Sometimes it feels as if the crying will never end!” The baby is crying because maybe he is hungry or sick.
I use the vacuum method. It works like magic. The noise should be louderthan the crying.
